Pharmaceutical waste falls into one of four categories – hazardous chemical waste, non-hazardous drugs, controlled substance waste, and biomedical waste. At Maine Labpack Inc., we offer management solutions and pharmaceutical waste disposal for all of these categories.

Hazardous Chemical Waste

A number of pharmaceuticals, many of which are chemotherapies, are regulated as hazardous waste because they exhibit ignitable, toxic, reactive or corrosive properties.

These pharmaceuticals include, but are not limited to:

  • Warfarin
  • Pure Nicotine
  • Uracil Mustard
  • Selenium Sulfide
  • Lindane
  • Cyclophosphamide

Non-Hazardous Waste Drugs

Non-hazardous pharmaceuticals include all drugs and medical supplies that do not carry a hazardous waste characteristic. Drugs such as antibiotics, hydrochlorothiazide, and statins are only available by prescription, and also often need secure disposal. At Maine Labpack Inc, we are able to manage non-hazardous pharmaceuticals, send them for secure incineration, and complete a certificate of destruction to ensure that these medications do not end up in the wrong hands.

Controlled Substance Waste

Controlled substance waste includes pharmaceuticals that are defined by the Drug Enforcement Agency as substances that cause dependence, or can be readily abused. These substances must be disposed of under DEA and EPA guidelines found in Final Rule: Management Standards for Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals and within Final Rule: Disposal of Controlled Substances. Maine Labpack Inc. offers solutions for the secure destruction of controlled drugs, complete with all required paperwork.

Biomedical Waste

Biomedical waste (also referred to as clinical waste, infectious waste, biohazardous waste, or medical waste) is created during medical research, testing, diagnosis, immunization, or treatment of human beings or animals. This type of waste contains infectious or otherwise potentially infectious material (OPIM) such as bodily fluids, used sharps, discarded bandages, gloves, and more. Maine Labpack Inc. provides the necessary materials for packaging and properly disposing of all forms of biomedical waste.
